Finding Inspiration at the National Museum of the American Indian

This museum has been on our to-do list for a long while and this past weekend we finally found ourselves down on Wall Street and decided it was time to mark it off the list. The museum entrance is flanked by several of these large scale sculptures. They are beyond beautiful and we spent as much time outside admiring them as we did inside looking at the exhibitions. The design and craftsmanship of these textiles and pieces below made us sorry we hadn’t visited sooner. They are truly timeless in their appeal.

We’ll close with one of our favorite portraits in the collection. This little fellow made us smile the minute we saw him–his outfit is perfection and his poise and hint of sass makes it even more brilliant.

California Dreaming…

No matter what time of the year we visit LA, we are always amazed at how lush and vibrant the vegetation is. This marvel of nature greeted us on our recent trip and we were delighted to find many streets lined with these beauties called Jacaranda trees and bloom only once a year. While in LA, we also love an invigorating morning hike to start our day. Our recent favorite is Mandeville Canyon. Check out those hills!

It’s hard to see how delicious (best mac & cheese ever!) this meal was from the Iphone photo, but the food they serve at Forage is fantastic; the concept is a bit like old school tray service restaurants meets hip deli. This delightful little spot was a recent find on a trip to the Los Feliz/Silver Lake area, and we will definitely be going back.

We found some great new resources on this trip and this lighting shop on La Brea was one of them. Dispela Antiques was literally filled floor to ceiling with thousands of chandeliers and wall sconces. We had to force ourselves to leave…would have been very easy to spend hours just looking at everything.

Liz’s Antique Hardware on La Brea was a drool-worthy resource for all forms of vintage hardware for inside and outside of the home.

With stacks and stacks of finds, we couldn’t help taking pictures of these one-of-a-kind doorknobs.

Our go-to source for all things antique is Wertz Brother’s Antique Mart in Santa Monica. If you need any good looking accessories, jewelry, or finishings, this place has it all. Here are some of our favorite finds this trip:

Stay tuned for flea finds tomorrow from Santa Monica’s Airport Antiques Mart!

For the Love of Photography…

We love photography of all kinds and all subject matter, though birds/animals and land/seascapes are some of our favorites. We encourage all of our clients to have at least one piece in their art collections–and they usually end up with the same passion for the medium as we have.
Below are some photographer’s work we really admire.

Troy Moth‘s exquisite birds of prey. Could happily stare at this fellow all day.

Dimitry Miroshnikov‘s wonderful and evocative photographs range from land to sea. This is one of our favorites.

Morten Koldby‘s photographs of animals make us, frankly, a bit giddy. How does he get them to sit that still and to pose so beautifully?

Alexander Semenov captures the alien-like creatures of the sea in a way that makes us wonder about getting back in the ocean again (well, not really but still…). We didn’t see anything quite this spectacular on our recent trip to the Caribbean, though we did both manage to get stung by a jellyfish.

And finally, but most importantly, we wanted to let you know about a wonderful fundraising event taking place on Monday, April 11th for PROOF: Media for Social Justice, founded by our good friend (and hero) Leora Kahn. PROOF: Media for Social Justice uses photography as means to inform and educate global audiences about human rights.
More information about PROOF and the event via the link above. We hope to see you there and be sure to bring your checkbook–some amazing photographers have donated work to be auctioned off for this event! If you can’t attend we encourage you to make a donation to support PROOF’s work.

One of the Joys of Being Your Own Boss…

It’s certainly not the mundane things like doing paperwork, meeting with the accountant, or filing taxes…it’s the hour you unexpectedly find you have free! So on Friday when we found ourselves blissfully without obligation and near the Metropolitan Museum of Art, we very happily ducked in for a couple of hours to see old favorites and The Emperor’s Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City exhibition. Here are just a few of the things that we love and inspire us at the Met (with apologies for the not fantastic Iphone photos):

Love the color and pattern combination.

We always wonder what the person who got to sit and play at this piano must have been thinking when their fingers hit the keys.

We love the rooms filled with these Grecian urns–simply fantastic.

A favorite Georgia O’Keefe painting.

From the Pre-Columbian wing; feather panels with an amazingly modern design.

This little silver elephant makes us smile every time we see him.

Pair of earrings we’d love to make copies of!

The Last Lions

Last Saturday, we attended a moving and inspiring talk by acclaimed film makers, Derek and Beverly Joubert. The pair have devoted their lives to documenting Africa’s big cats and this film–which took them four years to make–is a call to action. As noted in the film, lion numbers have dropped from 450,000 to 20,000 in the last 50 years, a number almost too startling to comprehend. Their filming, researching and partnership with National Geographic has created The Last Lions, one of the most moving documentaries we have seen in years.

As devoted fans of nature, lovers of all big cats, and die hard adventurers, we hope you will join us in support of saving one of our world’s most beautiful animals.

Proceeds from the film will go toward National Geographic’s “Big Cats Initiative”, which aims to help prevent the loss of habitat for lions and other large cats, which can require up to 100 miles of hunting ground for a single pride. For each viewing of the trailer on YouTube, $0.10 will be donated toward the cause up to 1,000,000 views (current views stand at about 150,000). You can also learn more or donate at CauseanUproar.org, or follow the organization on Twitter @CauseanUproar.
